Protein before bed: the night snack that closes the gap
It is 9pm. You add up the day in your head and you are 25 grams short. Again. You do not need a second dinner. You need one small snack on purpose.

Most moms do not miss their protein goal by a mile. They miss it by a snack. Twenty grams here, thirty grams there, and the day ends just short enough to feel annoying.
I used to close the kitchen and call it done. Then I would wake up hungry at 2am or start the next morning already behind and already irritated about it. That pattern is the whole problem I wrote about in why you are hungry at 3pm. The time of day changes. The math does not.
Why the night snack works
Here is the plain science part. Cottage cheese is mostly casein protein. Casein digests slower than a lot of other proteins, so it sits with you longer overnight instead of burning off fast. That is why a small bowl before bed keeps you full and gives your body protein to use while you sleep.
Muscle is the other piece. After 35 we start losing muscle just by existing, and protein is how you fight that. The shake I use in the morning has 20 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, 25 vitamins and minerals, and 0 grams of sugar, with added leucine. Leucine is the switch that tells your body to keep the muscle. That same idea is why I do not end a short day at zero. I close it.
If sleep is already a fight in this season, what to eat in perimenopause covers the bigger picture. This post is just the night piece of it.
Three night snacks that actually hit the number
1. Cottage cheese and berries. One cottage cheese cup with a handful of berries on top lands around 12 to 15 grams depending on the cup. It tastes like dessert if you let it sit for two minutes. No cooking, no dishes worth mentioning.
2. Greek yogurt bowl. A Greek yogurt with a spoonful of peanut butter stirred in gets you close to 20 grams. This is the one I reach for when dinner was light and I know it.
3. Half a shake. Half a serving of my morning shake in a small glass. You still get the leucine and a solid chunk of protein without feeling like you ate a meal at 9pm. Small glass, not the big blender bottle. Portion matters at night.
All three live on the same shelf in my fridge. That is on purpose. My weekly grocery list is built so the night snack is already in the house before the short day happens.
This is not another rule to fail
Read this part plain. The night snack is not a rule. Some nights dinner was big and you are done. Great. Close the kitchen.
It is a tool for the short days. The days where work ran long, practice ran late, and dinner was whatever fit between everything else. On those days you have two choices. End the day short and mad about it, or spend four minutes closing the gap and go to bed done.
That is the real need under this, if I am honest. Not the gram count. It is ending the day feeling like you took care of yourself too, not just everybody else. One small thing you did on purpose, at the end of a day that ran you. That is control you can actually have.
How to start this week
Pick one snack from the list above. Just one. Stock it today so it is there tonight.
Then check your number at dinner for three nights in a row. Not all day, just at dinner. If you are short by 15 to 30 grams, have the snack. If you are not short, skip it. Three nights. That is the whole experiment.
Most women tell me night three is when it clicks. The day stops ending with that low level annoyed feeling. You just did the math and handled it. Small, boring, done.
