The mom-bag protein kit
Protein on the go: what's actually in my bag every day
My protein number survives the road because it doesn't depend on my kitchen. Here's the kit that keeps me fed when the day happens somewhere else.
People picture my protein system as this tidy thing that happens in my kitchen. It is not. Half my week happens in the car, at the gym, or in some parking lot. If my number only worked at home, it would not work at all.
So I built the bag kit. It is not a plan B. It is the plan. The same ten foods from my kitchen, minus the ones that don't fit in a purse. Protein first still applies. Even at a red light.
Missed the math this whole thing is built on? Start with how I get 140g without living in the kitchen.
What's actually in the bag
The whole kit fits in one tote bag and costs me ten minutes on Sunday. Here it is, grams included, because I am a nerd about this now.
- String cheese, 7g each. I keep three. My kid steals one, which is why the number is three and not two.
- Almonds, 6g per handful. The little bag lives in the front pocket so I find it before the drive-thru menu.
- Hard-boiled eggs, 6g each. My chickens make them. I boil six to eight on Sunday and they live in the fridge until they go in the bag.
- Chobani 20g Greek yogurt. This one rides in the car cooler bag, not the purse. Twenty grams and a spoon. Summer rule: cooler or it stays home.
- The shake, 20g. I blend it before I walk out the door and drink it in the car. This one is still non-negotiable, road or not.
The three rules that make the kit work
1. Protein first, even in the car. Before the chips, before the drive-thru fries. Protein touches your mouth first. The rule does not care where you are.
2. The kit goes where I go. Not when I remember. Every time. The bag lives by the front door, packed, so I grab it the way I grab my keys.
3. Sunday stocks the week. Ten minutes: boil the eggs, portion the almonds, check the string cheese count. If it is not in the bag, it is not happening. I do not have willpower. I have a system.
What I don't do
I don't hit the gas station and panic-buy a candy bar. Not because I am a saint. Because the string cheese is already in my purse and it is easier than standing in the candy aisle pretending to decide.
I don't buy protein bars I hate. The good ones cost too much and the cheap ones taste like drywall with a wrapper. My staples are cheaper and I actually eat them. The full snack list lives here.
I don't skip and promise to catch up at dinner. That is how you end the day at 60 grams and mad about it. The bag kit is the catch-up, happening in real time.
Quick answers before you ask
Does the food go bad in a hot car? String cheese and almonds survive a purse for hours. Eggs and yogurt ride in the cooler bag when it is hot. Use the cooler when it is hot. That is the whole rule.
Does the bag replace the morning shake? Nope. The shake is still non-negotiable. The kit is backup, not the whole plan. Twenty grams before the day starts is a head start you cannot beat.
What about the kids? My kid treats my bag like a snack store. I plan for the theft. Pack one extra of everything and nobody fights in the back seat.
Isn't this just... snacks? Yes. Snacks with a protein number attached. That is the entire trick.
So what's in your bag right now? If the answer is an old receipt and hope, we can fix that this Sunday. Ten minutes.
