Protein math

Protein math made simple

You do not need an app open all day. You need four chunks and one number you actually remember.

Most women I talk to are not failing at protein. They are guessing at it. A little here, a little there, and at the end of the day the total is 60 grams when they needed twice that.

Guessing feels easy. It is not. Guessing is why 3pm shows up hungry and mad, and why dinner turns into a rescue mission. The fix is not more tracking. The fix is simpler math.

Start with your number, not a meal plan

I aim for 130 to 150 grams a day. That number came from my size, my goals, and a lot of trial and error. Yours might be different, and that is fine. Here is how I landed on my number in plain English.

You can also run your own number here in about 30 seconds. No email, no lecture. You cannot hit a target you have never seen, so get the target first. Everything after that is just splitting it up.

The chunk system: 30, 40, 20, 40, 10

This is the whole system. Breakfast lands around 30 grams. Lunch lands around 40. A planned snack lands around 20. Dinner lands around 40. Something small in the evening adds about 10. Add it up and you are at 140 without logging a single bite in real time.

I check the chunks, not every gram. Did breakfast count as a real anchor? Did lunch have a real protein on it, not just sides? Two yes answers by noon and the day is already hard to lose. That is control you can feel on a busy day, instead of one more thing you are behind on.

What a chunk actually looks like

Breakfast is my shake, and that habit is years old. The shake I use has 20 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, 25 vitamins and minerals, and 0 grams of sugar in a serving. I blend it in my Blender Bottle and add Greek yogurt or milk on the side most days, which gets breakfast close to that 30 gram chunk.

Plain science on why that first chunk matters: the leucine in that shake is the switch that tells your body to keep your muscle. After 35 we start losing muscle just by existing. Turning that switch on early is not a small thing. It is the thing.

Lunch and dinner are built around a palm and a half of protein, give or take. Chicken, ground turkey, eggs, tuna, whatever is already in the fridge. Snacks are the easy chunk people skip: a Greek yogurt, a cottage cheese cup, string cheese, or two hard boiled eggs will cover most of that 20.

The one week I used a scale, and why it stuck

Here is the part nobody wants to hear. My portions were wrong for a long time. What I called one serving of chicken was closer to half of what I thought it was.

So for one week, I weighed the main protein at lunch and dinner on a cheap digital kitchen scale. Seven days. That is it. After that week my eyes knew what 4 to 5 ounces actually looks like on a plate, and I stopped needing the scale every day. It still lives on my counter for recipe days and for the weeks my portions start creeping down again.

You are not weighing food forever. You are teaching your eyes once, so the guessing stops for good.

How this fits a real day

The chunk system works because it bends. Lunch was small? The snack chunk gets bigger. Dinner is out with family? Breakfast and lunch carry more that day, and the full day breakdown here shows how I stack it when the day is packed.

Taking care of yourself first is not a speech here. It is literally the first chunk of the day. You eat a real breakfast before the day starts asking you for everything, and the rest of the math gets easier from there. That is the whole point.

Start tomorrow with just the first chunk. Get breakfast to around 30 grams for three days in a row. Then add the snack chunk. Small, boring, and it adds up to a number you used to think was impossible.
